Infographic: Assassination census in Deir Ezzor province from 2018 to 2021
Investigating the assassinations in Deir Ezzor province for the last three years indicates that most of the assassinations were done by ISIS or their allied terrorists.
The battle that SDF under support of American coalition started in 2019 in Baghuz to conquer the last ISIS line increased the revenge and retaliation spirit in ISIS and allied terrorists against them. The main culprit of the assassinations in the area specially the outskirt is ISIS.
Nevertheless, it seems most of the assassinations are not organized. In fact, the terrorists have one goal with different methods. ISIS usually refer to them as “lone wolf” members. On the other hand, the conflict of various powers in Syria shows the possibility of their participation in assassinations and the benefit of insecurity in the region east of the Euphrates.
The nature of the assassinations in Deir Ezzor: For the SDF militia, it is enough to be associated with Kurds to be assassinated. More than 44 SDF militants and three commanders were counted to be killed.
Assassination of employees and officials in Deir Ezzor: Eight chiefs and eight members of local councils were assassinated. The reason is to scare people and prevent them to collaborate with Deir Ezzor civil council, which is related to SDF and American coalition.
Assassination of three former FSA members and three SDF militants: They were done by revenge motivation. Victims were former members and might have had sensitive information.
Assassination of tribe elders in Deir Ezzor: They are not limited to SDF members, but anyone who has a high social or tribal influence. At least seven has been reported.
Assassination of at least 157 civilians which is the highest number: There are different motivations. It shows lack of safety and security in Deir Ezzor outskirt specially in the eastern part, in which most of the assassinations happened.
Assassinations with unclear motivation: Although the motivation of most of the assassinations are clear from the relationships of victims but some are still mysterious.
