Ukraine Attacks Crimean Bridge With Modified S-200 Missiles
On August 12 afternoon, Russian air defense intercepted two incoming missiles over the Crimean Bridge, according to the region’s governor, Sergey Aksenov.
“Air defenses have shot down two enemy rockets in the Kerch Strait area,” the governor said on his Telegram channel. “Crimean Bridge has not been damaged.”
Photos and videos that surfaced on social media showed what appears to be several columns of white smoke billowing from the bridge. Aksenov’s aide, Oleg Kryuchkov, revealed that a “smoke screen has been set off by the special services.” He also wrote that the Crimean Bridge would be reopened to vehicles “very soon.”
In a statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Ukraine attempted to conduct a “terrorist strike” on the Crimean Bridge using Soviet-era S-200 anti-aircraft missiles which were converted into ground attack missiles.
Russian air defenses “detected the Ukrainian rocket in a timely manner and intercepted it in mid-air,” the ministry said, adding that the failed missile attack had not caused any casualties or material losses. In the early morning, Ukraine attempted to attack the Crimean Peninsula with 20 suicide drones. 14 of the drones were destroyed by air defenses systems, while the remaining six were jammed by electronic warfare means. No losses were reported as a result of the attack.
