Iran’s Foreign Minister Visits Damascus

Hossein Amirabdollahian, Iran’s Foreign Minister, arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on April 8 on the second leg of his regional tour, where he met with senior Syrian officials.

After arriving in Damascus one week after the Israeli regime’s airstrike on Iran’s consulate, Amirabdollahian met and held talks with his Syrian counterpart, Faisal Mekdad. According to Syrian sources, the repercussions of the Israeli regime’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus were the main topic of discussion.

It is said that during the meeting between the Iranian foreign minister and senior Syrian officials, issues related to bilateral relations, regional developments, especially the Palestinian issue and the situation in the Gaza Strip, will be discussed and they will exchange views on these topics. It is also planned for Amirabdollahian to inaugurate a new building of the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

It is worth mentioning that Iran’s foreign minister, prior to his trip to Damascus, arrived in Oman’s capital city Muscat at the head of a political and parliamentary delegation and held talks with his Omani counterpart Sayyid Badr Al-Busaidi. During his presence in Oman, Amirabdollahian also met and negotiated with Mohammed Abdul Salam, the spokesman for the Ansar Allah movement and the official in charge of negotiations of the Yemeni Salvation Government.

Iran’s foreign minister’s regional tour, following the Israeli regime’s attack on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus and simultaneous with increasing tensions in the region, are of special importance. It is said that Amirabdollahian’s third destination will be the Lebanese capital Beirut.
