Syrian Free Army Officially Joins Interior Ministry of the Syrian Interim Government
The Syrian Free Army (Jaysh al-Suri al-Hur – SFA) previously known as the Maghawir al-Thawra, which receives direct support from the United States, has officially joined the Ministry of Interior of the Syrian Interim Government.
Its new mandate will focus on securing Syria’s desert regions. According to Syrian sources, coordination between the SFA and the U.S.-led coalition will continue uninterrupted, and this structural shift will not affect their joint operations.
The SFA remains stationed at the al-Tanf military base, located at the tri-border area between Syria, Jordan, and Iraq. This base serves as the main command center for the group and also hosts units from the U.S.-led coalition.
Previously, the SFA operated under the command of the 70th Division affiliated with Syria’s Ministry of Defense. Its transfer to the Ministry of Interior signals a shift from a purely military role to a more security and policing-oriented mission. The new assignment in Syria’s desert regions is likely aimed at strengthening the interim government’s control over key transit routes and countering terrorist activity in the eastern deserts. The emphasis on continued coordination with the U.S. coalition confirms that this organizational change was made with Washington’s approval and oversight.
