UAE foreign minister meets Syria’s President in Damascus
ISWNews Analysis Group: A high-ranking Emirati delegation headed by the UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus and met with Bashar al-Assad.
On November 9, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad hosted UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his political deputy, Lifa Shahin Khalifa Al-Marr.
Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed is the most senior Emirati dignitary to visit Syria in the decade since the eruption of war in which several Arab states backed mainly Sunni Muslim militants against the Syrian government.
It should be noted that the UAE reopened its embassy in Damascus in 2018
During the meeting, the development of bilateral cooperation in various fields and a new effort to identify areas of cooperation in vital sectors in order to strengthen investment partnerships in these areas were discussed.
Emphasizing the UAE’s support for stability in Syria, the UAE Foreign Minister said: “Given what happened in Syria, it affected all Arab countries.” He expressed confidence that Syria, under the leadership of President Assad and the efforts of its people, will be able to overcome the challenges imposed by the war. “The UAE is always ready to support the Syrian people,” Abdullah said.
