Attack On The Azerbaijani Embassy In Tehran + Video
ISWNews Analysis Group – As a result of the attack by an armed person on the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Tehran, the head of the embassy’s security team was killed and two other employees were injured.
As a result of an armed attack by an unknown assailant on the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Tehran, at 8:32 on Friday, 27th of January, Orkhan Asgarov, the head of the embassy’s security team, was killed and two of its employees were injured. The armed person was arrested by the security forces of the embassy.
According to the statements by the Tehran Police, the attacker came to the Azerbaijan embassy with two children and entered the embassy and started shooting at the security agents with a firearm (Kalashnikov). The attacker stated that his motivation for this action was personal and family problems. In his initial confession, he said:
“In April of this year, my wife went to the Azerbaijan Embassy in Tehran and has not returned home. During my repeated visits to the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Tehran, I did not receive any response from them, and I thought that my wife was present at the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Tehran and was not willing to meet me. This morning I decided to go to the embassy with the Kalashnikov that I had already prepared.”
The Foreign Ministries of Iran, Russia and Turkey as well as some other countries condemned this incident by issuing statements while expressing their condolences to their Azerbaijani counterparts.
On 28 January, the President of Iran Ebrahim Raisi called the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev by phone. Raisi expressed his condolences to Aliyev and the family of Orkhan Asgarov, wishing the injured a speedy recovery. Aliyev expressed his strong condemnation of the attack, which he called a terrorist act, and expressed his hope for thorough and transparent investigation and punishment of the perpetrator to the full extent of the law. Aliyev also mentioned the courage of one guard who managed to disarm the attacker and thus prevent further casualties.
Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian during a telephone conversation with his Azerbaijani counterpart expressed regret at the incident that killed one diplomat and wounded two of the embassy staff and offered condolences to the Azerbaijani foreign minister and the family of the deceased diplomat. He also warned that the enemies of the two countries could take advantage of this incident, saying Baku and Tehran should not let their ties be affected by the attack.
