ISWNews Analysis Group – Russian president’s special envoy Alexander Lavrentiev held a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus, discussing certain issues such as bilateral ties and regional developments.

The talks were held in the Syrian capital of Damascus on January 12, when the two sides reviewed strategic relationship between Moscow and Damascus as well as regional and international circumstances.

The Syrian chief executive stated that the political and media campaign is the harshest warfare at present, and that the issue needs to be responded via more clarification and stability in political stances; thus, Syria supports Russia’s special military operation in Donbas region.

Lavrentiev, for his part, said that Russia appreciates constructive stances adopted by Syria from the start of the military operation in Ukraine, and that there are numerous countries in the world, which are faithful in Russian victory. The pressures by the US and its allies to isolate Russia and Syria failed to bear fruit; so, we should make the best use of the instant developments of the globe, the Russian official added.

The Russian official also referred to the recent meeting of defense ministers from Syria, Turkiye and Russia in Moscow, evaluated the conference as positive, and said that Russia is of the opinion that such meetings are of significance.

Al-Assad went on to say that in order to be fruitful, the meetings should be based on coordination and pre-planning between Russia and Syria with the aim of materializing the tangible goals and results expected by Damascus; therefore, the conferences should be based on the national principles of the Syrian government and people, which focus on the end of occupation and the secession of backing terrorism.

A few days ago, the Turkish Aydınlık newspaper quoted informed sources as saying that Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will meet prior to the Turkish presidential elections – slated for June 18, 2023 – as their third round of talks to normalize and improve mutual ties, which is the result of recent developments in northern Syria.
