Clashes Between Southern Transitional Council Supporters and Forces of the Saudi-backed Government in Ataq
Armed forces affiliated with the internationally recognized (exiled) government, acting on orders from Shabwah’s security command, opened fire on supporters of Southern Transitional Council (STC) gathered outside the Shabwah governorate building in the city of Ataq. The incident reportedly resulted in an unspecified number of casualties among the southern supporters.
Media outlets aligned with the exiled government claim that STC supporters fired toward the governorate building and attempted to seize it, prompting security forces to respond.
Protests by supporters of the Southern Transitional Council against the exiled government have spread across most southern Yemeni cities after the council—and the United Arab Emirates—announced opposition to the newly formed cabinet headed by Shaea al-Zindani. Ataq is among the cities where these demonstrations escalated into clashes and the reported killing of protesters.
