Turkish Foreign Minister: Meeting With Syrian Authorities Will Be Held In January
ISWNews Analysis Group: Mevlut Cavusoglu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey announced the possibility of holding a tripartite meeting with the presence of the Foreign Ministers of Syria, Turkey and Russia in the second half of January.
Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu said on December 31, in response to journalists’ questions, that the meeting with the Syrian authorities will probably take place in the middle of January. It is said that this date was determined after the Turkish Foreign Minister’s phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Cavusoglu said:
“We have not yet decided where to hold this meeting. It may be held in a third country. The names of some countries have also been mentioned. Normalizing relations with a country requires several meetings, not one. Otherwise, no progress will be made in it.”
Turkish Foreign Minister continued his speech and said:
“Some terrorist groups are seeking to take advantage of the resulting vacuum in Syria, and Ankara is a supporter of Syria’s territorial and border integrity and has no ambitions for it.”
It is worth mentioning that the first tripartite meeting between Syria, Turkey and Russia was held in Moscow in December 28, 2022. During this meeting, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and Hakan Fidan, the head of the country’s National Intelligence Organization, met with Syrian Defense Minister Ali Mahmoud Abbas, Syrian Intelligence Chief Ali Mamluk and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. They discussed solving the Syrian crisis, immigrants and fighting terrorism in Syria. At the end of this meeting, the defense ministers of Russia, Syria and Turkey pointed out the constructiveness of the talks and the need to continue the talks of the three countries in order to increase the stability of the situation in Syria and the entire region.
